100 Year Proclamation
PROCLAMATION
CELEBRATING THE 100th ANNIVERSARY OF TAMALPAIS HIGH SCHOOL
WHEREAS, Tamalpais High School held its first classes for students in August 1908 in canvas tents and a temporary shack with 70 students, four teachers and a principal who believed in “Learning by Doing,” with classes in English, Commerce, Science, German, Latin, home economics, woodshop, mechanical drawing, bricklaying, blacksmithing, ceramics, auto repair, printing, and mechanical drawing; and
WHEREAS, Tamalpais High grew and added new classroom buildings in Spanish Mission style, a library, cafeteria, the Band Box, gymnasiums, a swimming pool, athletic fields, an amphitheater, and landscaped lawns and gardens, many designed and built by teachers and students, and become a school city on a hill overlooking the Bay and Mountain, one of the most beautiful and historic school campuses in California; and is again once more under construction to meet the challenges of the 21st century; and
WHEREAS, in its 100-year history, Tam High has graduated more than 25,000 students, taught by dedicated and talented teachers who celebrated diversity, honored excellence, prepared them to become better men and women in whatever walk of life they engage, and provided opportunities to question, create, think and dream; and
WHEREAS, thousands of Tam High students over the years have proudly worn the colors red and blue, competing first as the Tamalpais Indians and now as the Red Tailed Hawks in baseball, diving, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, track, volleyball, water polo and other sports; and
WHEREAS, today Tamalpais High School serves 1,050 students from Mill Valley, Marin City, Sausalito, Stinson, and Bolinas, providing them with a challenging high school curriculum including elective, Honors and AP classes as well as the Academy of Integrated Humanities (AIM), and Conservatory Theatre Ensemble (CTE): and
WHEREAS, Tam High students recently produced regional student Emmy-award winning films, won national titles for Mock Trial, produced award-winning original plays, achieved music, art, poetry awards, and traveled internationally to France, Spain, Italy, Great Britain, Cuba, Vietnam and other countries with the Global Studies program;
WHEREAS, Tamalpais High School continues to rank the highest of all Marin County High Schools in state testing results in 2005, 2006 and 2007, was ranked by Newsweek in the top five percent of American high schools for the last three years in a row, and received the California Distinguished School Award in 1999 and 2005; and
WHEREAS, the ongoing success and achievements of Tamalpais High School, its students, teachers and alumni contributes greatly to the exemplary reputation of Mill Valley and Southern Marin as one of the great places to live and raise children; and
NOW THEREFORE BE IT PROCLAIMED THAT I, Shawn Marshall, Mayor of the City of Mill Valley, hereby congratulate Tamalpais High School on this 100th anniversary of this unique public school and community treasure, and declare that all citizens of Mill Valley shall extend appreciation to students, alumni, teachers, staff and volunteers.
