AVID is a program dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and other postsecondary opportunities. In AVID, we hold students accountable to the highest standards, provide academic and social support, and in turn, students rise to the challenge.

A Tam AVID student typically...

• Has a GPA of 2.0 to 3.5 
• Exhibits a positive attitude, is a hard worker, and is collaborative in nature (per teacher recommendations) 
• Is able to complete four-year university entrance requirements prior to graduation 
• Is underrepresented racially, culturally, or economically in colleges and universities 
• Has potential and motivation, but may have other obstacles to achievement 
• Meets standards on state tests

What AVID Is… 

• For “middle to upper-middle” academic students who have the potential for honors/AP work in school, but need academic and emotional support 
• Combines rigor with support that includes each student’s individual determination, the support of teachers, other AVID students, family members, the AVID teacher(s), and college tutors
• Students in AVID must maintain a 2.0 GPA or higher throughout the school year 
• It is designed to support students, to both attend and graduate from a four year university

What AVID is not…

• For students who fail to complete their homework
• For unmotivated students. Students are expected to have “individual determination” and be willing to complete challenging work
• AVID is a support, not an intervention 

What AVID Provides...

Instruction in Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading strategies (W.I.C.O.R.) that will help you be successful in all your classes 

• Planning 4 years at Tam, so that you can meet graduation and college requirements 
• Build community within our school
• College Planning (Research, personal statements, financial aid, SAT/ACT prep etc.)
• College visits, and other field trips!
