AVID is a program dedicated to preparing all students for college and other postsecondary opportunities. In AVID, we hold students accountable to the highest standards, provide academic and social support, and in turn, students rise to the challenge.

How can you apply to the AVID program?

Please fill out the 2025/26 AVID application Linked here:

When you register for classes please list that you are interested in AVID as an elective choice. If you have any questions please reach out to your counselor or the AVID Site Coordinator, Suzanne Garcia at sgarcia@tamdistrict.org.

What is AVID?

What AVID Is…

  • An elective course with its own curriculum

  • A place to learn WICOR strategies (writing, inquiry, collaboration, organizational, and reading skills) that are transferable to all subject areas

  • A place to create a four-year plan with your AVID counselor to ensure you meet high school graduation and college entrance requirements

  • A place for students who want to challenge themselves with honors/AP work and would like some support

  • A place to develop strong relationships with one teacher and a core group of classmates for four years

  • An opportunity for peer and adult tutoring

  • A place where students can get support with the college application and financial aid processes

  • A place for the AVID teacher, counselor, students, families, and tutors to work as a team to support each AVID student

  • An opportunity for enrichment activities like college visits, team building field trips, and motivational speakers

What AVID is not…

  • An Academic Workshop or study hall class

  • For unmotivated students. Students are expected to have “individual determination” and be willing to complete challenging work

  • AVID is a support, not an intervention. AVID teachers are not trained to provide special education or mental health services

What does a Tamalpais High School AVID student look like?
